Kate Greenaway 2014 – ‘Wellies’ on the shortlist!

March 24, 2014 § 2 Comments

sheepfield-&-lamb-P.16-7  ‘If I was Oliver Twist, I wouldn’t get seconds…’ is what a certain five year old said at the breakfast table last week. And so we were talking about drawing the short straw. But this little update concerns a short list, and not a bowl of gruel in sight. Wellies has been included on the shortlist for the Greenaway Award, amongst the following:

The Paper Dolls by Rebecca Cobb (illustrator) and Julia Donaldson (author) (Macmillan Children’s Books)

Where My Wellies Take Me by Olivia Lomenech Gill (illustrator) and Michael Morpurgo and Clare Morpurgo (authors) (Templar)

The Day the Crayons Quit by Oliver Jeffers (illustrator) and Drew Daywalt (author) (HarperCollins Children’s Books)

This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen (Walker Books) The Dark by Jon Klassen (illustrator) and Lemony Snicket (author) (Orchard Books)

Mouse, Bird, Snake, Wolf by Dave McKean (illustrator) and David Almond (author) (Walker Books)

Oliver by Birgitta Sif (Walker Books)

Chair of the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway judging panel, Helen Thompson, says: “We know that children’s authors and illustrators say that these are the awards that they ‘most want to win’ – indeed, whoever emerges victorious from these superbly strong shortlists will have achieved an extraordinary feat.”

So, given the august company Wellies, (the result of a chance meeting and a rather big gamble on the part of a certain writer and publisher) now sits amongst, I can’t resist this little announcement, and the opportunity to say thank you very much to all the judges! Here’s a page from the book which is exactly what the fields outside look like right now, spring has sprung and no lambing storms to date…
